Index Fungorum, Facesoffungi, MycoBank, GenBank.

Classification: Nectriaceae, Hypocreales, Hypocreomycetidae, Sordariomycetes, Pezizomycotina, Ascomycota, Fungi.

Associated with tree bark. Sexual morph: Stromata well-developed, immersed, composed of pseudoparenchymatous to hyphal cells. Ascomata perithecial, solitary or gregarious on stroma, pyriform, apex flattened and apapillate, dark red, apical region darker red-coloured, KOH+ darker, LA+ yellow, scaly to warty and thick-walled, lacking hairs. Peridium of two strata: outer stratum of thick-walled, pigmented cells of textura angularis to textura globulosa at warts cells; inner stratum of elongate, hyaline, thin-walled cells, becoming thinner towards the centrum. Paraphyses lacking. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical to clavate, with rounded to flattened simple apex. Ascospores overlapping uniseriate to biseriate, ellipsoidal, 1-septate, not constricted at septum, pale yellow-brown, smooth-walled to finely striate. Asexual morph: Conidiophores mononematous (aerial) or grouped on sporodochia. Aerial conidiophores unbranched or rarely branched, bearing terminal phialides. Conidiogenous cells monophialidic, cylindrical to subcylindrical, with periclinal thickening inconspicuous to visible, smooth- and thin-walled, producing only macroconidia. Sporodochia grey, setose. Sporodochial setae arising between and around sporodochia, stiff, erect with acute tip, at first hyaline later becoming pale golden brown, thick-walled. Sporodochial conidiophores densely packed, irregularly and verticillately branched, consisting of short, often swollen, smooth- and thin-walled stipes bearing apical whorl of 2–3 monophialides or single, terminal monophialides. Sporodochial conidiogenous cells monophialidic, cylindrical to subcylindrical, with inconspicuous to visible periclinal thickening, smooth- and thin-walled. Macroconidia cylindrical, (0–)3–5(–7)-septate, gently curved, with a blunt apical cell and an obtuse to poorly developed foot-shaped basal cell, held in off-white or grey slimy masses. Microconidia absent. Chlamydospores absent (adapted from Crous et al. 2021).

Known distribution: French Guiana (Crous et al. 2021)

Notes: Crous et al. (2021) introduced this monotypic genus to include Fusarium setosum. In current study, Setofusarium showed close phylogenetic affinities to Albonectria (Perera RH et al. 2023). However, Albonectria is characterized by pale yellow to white perithecia while Setofusarium has dark red perithecia (Crous et al. 2021).

Type species: Setofusarium setosum (Nirenberg & Samuels) Crous & Sand.-Den., in Crous et al., Stud. Mycol. 98(no. 100116): 76 (2021).

Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Setofusarium.
