Index Fungorum, Facesoffungi, MycoBank, GenBank.

Classification: Nectriaceae, Hypocreales, Hypocreomycetidae, Sordariomycetes, Pezizomycotina, Ascomycota, Dikarya, Fungi.

Saprobic, plant pathogenic, on decaying or living woody and herbaceous substrates, sometimes on stromatic fungi. Sexual morph: Ascomata perithecial, solitary or in groups, superficial on a minute stroma, on an erumpent, previously conidial stroma, or at the base of a synnema, subglobose to broadly obpyriform, apapillate or minutely papillate, red, turning dark red in KOH, surface with hyaline to yellow hyphal hairs; hairs smooth, spinulose, hooked or straight, septate, thin-walled, arising from the surface of the ascomatal wall and forming around the ascomatal base, sometimes forming a tomentum on the ascomatal surface. Apical paraphyses septate, constricted at each septum, hyaline. Asci 8-spored, unitunicate, clavate to fusiform, apex simple or with a ring. Ascospores ellipsoid to fusiform, 1-septate, hyaline to pale yellow-brown, striate. Asexual morph: Conidiomata sporodochial, cupulate to synnematal, superficial. Setae simple, septate, rarely branched, straight or circinate, brown, walls smooth or verruculose. Conidiophores macronematous, irregularly, verticillately, or penicillately branched, hyaline, smooth-walled. Conidiogenous cells phialidic, cylindrical or doliiform to reniform, hyaline, smooth-walled. Conidia cylindrical to ellipsoid, straight, 0–1-septate, hyaline, aggregated in slimy masses (adapted from Rossman et al. 1999, Lombard et al. 2015).

Known distribution: Tropical or subtropical areas (Rossman et al. 1999).

Notes: Sarcopodium was introduced for S. circinatum by Ehrenberg (1818). Sutton (1981) considered the generic names Tricholeconium, Periolopsis, Actinostilbe, Kutilakesa and Kutilakesopsis as synonyms of Sarcopodium. The sexual morph genus Lanatonectria, which was previously referred as Nectria flavolanata-group, has been transferred to Sarcopodium based on phylogenetic analyses (Lombard et al. 2015; Pennycook and Kirk 2019). Rossman et al. (2016) also supported the placement of the Actinostilbe and the Lanatonectria under the oldest name Sarcopodium.

Type species: Sarcopodium circinatum Ehrenb., Sylv. mycol. berol. (Berlin): 23 (1818).

Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Sarcopodium.
