Classification: Ascomycota genera incertae sedis, Fungi.

Sarcoexcipula was introduced by Etayo et al. (2008c) to describe the type species S. pannariae, which grows on the thalli and ascomata of the pale lichen Pannaria pallida. This genus is characterized as a lichenicolous fungus with black, sessile, subglobose perithecioid ascomata, measuring 100–150 µm in diameter and possessing a thick wall (50–65 µm). The hymenium displays distinctive reactions: I+ red-violet and KI+ blue. Asci are broadly clavate and bitunicate, producing cylindrical, hyaline ascospores with 0–7 septa (Etayo et al. 2008c).

The phylogenetic placement of Sarcoexcipula remains unresolved due to the absence of molecular data, necessitating further research for clarification.

Type species: Sarcoexcipula pannariae Etayo, on Pannaria pallida. (Etayo et al. 2008c)

Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Sarcoexcipula.
