Citation when using this data: Dayarathne MC et al. 2025 – Fungalpedia, Ascomycota.
Index Fungorum, Facesoffungi, MycoBank, GenBank.
Classification: Lulworthiaceae, Lulworthiales, Incertae sedis, Sordariomycetes, Pezizomycotina, Ascomycota, Fungi
Epizooic on the tunicate Halocynthia paillosa (red sea squirt). Sexual morph: Undetermined. Asexual morph: Hyphae septate, sub-hyaline sometimes lightly pigmented, assuming a toruloid aspect mainly in submerged mycelium, with dark concretions like small droplets on hyphae in old cultures. Chlamydospores subhyaline to light brown, globose to sub-globose, monocellular, sometimes one septate, and pyriform.
Notes: Rambellisea was established by Braconcini et al. (2024) with Rambellisea gigliensis as the type species, based on the multi-locus phylogenetic analysis of nuclear ITS, 28S, and 18S rDNA sequence data. Rambellisea gigliensis was isolated from sporulating material on the tunica of ascidians or sea squirts, Halocynthia papillosa, and characterised by enlarged hyphae and chlamydospore production. No sexual or asexual structures were reported. Rambellisea forms a sister clade with Paralulworthia while a second species, R. halocynthiae, was also isolated from tunica of H. papillosa collected at Giglio Island (Grosseto), Punta Gabbianara, Mediterranean Sea, Tuscany, Italy.
Type species: Rambellisea gigliensis Pasqual. & Braconcini, J. Fungi 10 (2, no. 127): 8 (2024).
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Rambellisea.
