Psorula was intrudoced by Schneider (1979) to accommodate two lichen species, P. rufonigra and P. scotopholis, originally combined from Biatora. Psorula scotopholis was later transferred to Miriquidica scotopholis (Nash III et al. 2004). Rambold et al. (1992) reported that P. rufonigra is a lichenicolous lichen growing on Spilonema, and this species was included in the lichenicolous list by Diederich et al. (2018a).
The type species is characterized by a squamosa, imbricate thallus that changes from pale rufous to blackish. Its apothecia are adnate, plane, obtusely margined, atrorufous to black, and become convex over time. According to Schneider (1980), Psorula differs from Psora in the morphology of the apothecia, the scattered occurrences of algae in the squamules, the structure of the lower hymenium, and the different types of paraphyses (Timdal 1984).
Type species: Psorula rufonigra (Tuck.) Gotth. Schneid., on Spilonema (Schneider 1979)
= Biatora rufonigra Tuck.
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Psorula.
