Pseudopyrenidium is a lichenicolous genus established by Navarro-Rosinés et al. (2010) to accommodate the type species P. tartaricola (Linds.) Nav.-Ros., Zhurb. & Cl. Roux, a parasite on terricolous Ochrolechia. The type species was transferred from Verrucaria tartaricola Linds. The genus is characterized by perithecioid, black, globose to subglobose, ostiolate ascomata; a prosoplectenchymatous excipulum with two layers (outer layer brownish-brown, inner layer colorless); septate paraphyses; bitunicate, subcylindrical to elongate-clavate, 4-spored asci; and ellipsoid to broadly fusiform ascospores that are initially colorless, later becoming brownish, multi-septate, and granulose-verrucose in texture (Navarro-Rosinés et al. 2010). Based on its morphological features, Pseudopyrenidium was initially placed in Adelococcaceae (Verrucariales) by Navarro-Rosinés et al. (2018a). However, Diederich et al. (2018a) suggested that the genus should instead belong to Pleosporales incertae sedis.

Another lichenicolous species in this genus, P. epipertusariae Etayo & Pino-Bodas, parasitizes Pertusaria pertusa (Etayo et al. 2021). Phylogenetic analyses based on LSU and ITS by Etayo et al. (2021) showed that P. epipertusariae was related to a clade comprising Acericola italica Wanas, Jeremyomyces labinae, and Xenophoma puncteliae, all members of Phaeosphaeriaceae M.E. Barr. In addition to its morphological similarities with Pseudopyrenidium tartaricola, the genus was subsequently placed in Phaeosphaeriaceae.
