Classification: Dictyosporiaceae, Pleosporales, Pleosporomycetidae, Dothideomycetes, Pezizomycotina, Ascomycota, Fungi
Saprobic on the host plant or submerged stems in freshwater or in the soil. The sexual morph is characterised by ascomata which are immersed to erumpent, globose to subglobose, and separate or confluent. The ostiole is located in the center and is comprised of subglobose dark brown cells. The ascomatal wall is comprised of polygonal to rectangular cells. The pseudoparaphyses are numerous. Asci are 8-spored, cylindrical to clavate, fissitunicate and short-stalked. Ascospores are hyaline, 1-septate, smooth, fusiform, and with a conspicuous sheath (Tanaka et al. 2015). The asexual morph is characterised by the immersed to erumpent pycnidial conidiomata, which are dark brown to black, unilocular, glabrous, solitary to scattered or gregarious, globose to subglobose or ovoid, and ostiolate. The ostiole is cylindrical to sybcylindrical or obconic, and located in the center. The pycnidial wall is comprised of textura angularis to textura prismatica, thick-walled and dark brown to brown then hyaline cells. Conidiophores are reduced to conidiogenous cells. Conidiogenous cells are enteroblastic and phialidic, determinate, doliiform, lageniform to subcylindrical, hyaline and smooth-walled. Conidia are hyaline, cylindrical to subcylindrical or fusiform, smooth-walled and aseptate (Tanaka et al. 2015, Li et al. 2020).
Notes: Pseudocoleophoma was introduced by Tanaka et al. (2015) based on P. calamagrostidis as the type species with the sexual and asexual morph, which was isolated from dead leaves of Calamagrostis matsumurae. Pseudocoleophoma was separated from Coleophoma by lack pycnidia possessing paraphyses, and Pseudocoleophoma belong to Pleosporales, rather than the Dothideales (De Gruyter et al. 2009). Jiang et al. (2021) considered P. clematidis as a synonym of Pseudocyclothyriella clematidis based on morphology and phylogeny. Currently, there are 12 species listed in Pseudocoleophoma in Species Fungorum (September 2024). There are more than 100 sequence data available for Pseudocoleophoma in GenBank (September 2024). The updated taxonomic treatment of this genus is Dictyosporiaceae, in Pleosporales (Dothideomycetes) (Wijayawardene et al. 2022).
