Proliferophorum Wang et al. was introduced by Phookamsak et al. (2019) with a single species, Proliferophorum thailandicum collected from a freshwater habitat in Thailand. The genus is characterized by macronematous, mononematous, unbranched, septate conidiophores, holoblastic, polyblastic, terminal, sympodial conidiogenous cells and fusiform to cylindrical, septate, brown conidia. Proliferophorum is morphologically similar to Minimelanolocus, however, Proliferophorum is distinct by the conidiophores with few upper guttulate cells and conidia with obvious droplets (Phookamsak et al. 2019) and they are separate in two different class, Eurotiomycetes and Sordariomycetes, respectively. Proliferophorum formed a distinct clade sister to Phomatosporales and Amplistromatales within Diaporthomycetidae when it was introduced (Phookamsak et al. 2019). However, the morphology of Proliferophorum does not match with either, therefore, it is placed in Diaporthomycetidae genera incertae sedis. This genus was not included in any later phylogenetic studies. In our phylogenetic analysis, Proliferophorum and Platytrachelon clustered together with low support, and divergence time estimates showed that the stem age of Proliferophorum is around 76 MYA, which falls within the family range (50–130 MYA). This indicates that this genus can be rise to the family level. However, due to its unstable phylogenetic relationships, we, therefore, keep this genus in Diaporthomycetidae genera incertae sedis. Furthermore, additional collections and phylogenetic studies are recommended to resolve the placement of this genus.
