Index Fungorum, Faceoffungi, MycoBank, GenBank.

Classification: Pleosporales, Pleosporomycetidae, Dothideomycetes, Pezizomycotina, Ascomycota, Dikarya, Fungi.

Saprobic on dead culm of unidentified herbaceous plant. Sexual morph: Ascomata deeply immersed to throughout the surface with a broadly pore-like ostiole, globose to subglobose, dark brown to black, scattered, solitary, non-papillate. Peridium carbonaceous to coriaceous, composed of several layers of dark pigmented cells or pale pigmented to hyaline cells of textura angularius. Hamathecium comprising branched, septate, filamentous pseudoparaphyses, anastomosing between and above the asci, intermixed with a gelatinous matrix. Asci bitunicate, fissitunicate, cylindrical to clavate, short pedicellate, apically round with a developed ocular chamber. Ascospores narrowly fusoid, septate. Asexual morph: Undetermined.

Notes: Profundisphaeriaceae is typical of Pleosporales in having perithecioid ascomata with bitunicate, fissitunicate asci and mostly septate ascospores. However, it differs from other families of Pleosporales by its ostiole with broadly pore-like opening. Profundisphaeriaceae forms an independent clade within Pleosporales (Zhang JF et al. 2023). Therefore, Profundisphaeriaceae is established as a new family to accommodate the type genus Profundisphaeria.

Type genus: Profundisphaeria J.F. Zhang, Jian K. Liu & Z.Y. Liu.

Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Profundisphaeriaceae.
