Index Fungorum, Faceoffungi, MycoBank, GenBank, Fig 1.

Classification: Profundisphaeriaceae, Pleosporales, Pleosporomycetidae, Dothideomycetes, Pezizomycotina, Ascomycota, Fungi.

Saprobic on dead culm of unidentified herbaceous plant. Sexual morph: Ascomata deeply immersed, globose to subglobose, scattered, solitary, non-papillate, ostiolate. Ostiole central, with a broadly pore-like opening, and lined with numerous periphyses in the ostiolar canal. Peridium carbonaceous to coriaceous, composed of two strata, with the outer stratum consisting dark pigmented cells of unclear texture, and the inner stratum of several layers of pale pigmented to hyaline, thin-walled cells of textura angularius. Hamathecium comprising numerous, branched, septate, filamentous pseudoparaphyses, anastomosing between and above the asci, embedded in a gelatinous matrix. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, fissitunicate, cylindrical to clavate, short pedicellate, apically round with a developed ocular chamber. Ascospores overlapping bi-seriate to tri-seriate, narrowly fusoid, two-celled, constricted at the septum, asymmetrical, guttulate. Asexual morph: Undetermined.

Notes: Profundisphaeria is introduced as a monotypic genus to accommodate the type species P. fusiformispora based on morphological examination and molecular analysis. More fresh collections of Profundisphaeria are needed to stabilize the placement of this genus and the family Profundisphaeriaceae.

Type species: Profundisphaeria fusiformispora J.F. Zhang, Jian K. Liu & Z.Y. Liu.

Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Profundisphaeria.
