NotesPleohelicoon was established by Jayasiri et al. (2019), with P. fagi as the type species based on phylogenetic analyses of the combined ITS, LSU, and SSU sequence data and morphological characteristics. Pleohelicoon is characterized by solitary, acrogenous, simple, pale brown to dark fuscous, multi-septate, ovoid, spherical, ellipsoidal, hollow, doliiform conidia that are tightly coiled in three dimensional planes in a clockwise direction (Jayasiri et al. 2019). Pleohelicoon currently comprises two species, P. fagi and P. richonis, which have been found from both freshwater and terrestrial habitats in various regions, including China, France, and Great Britain (Linder 1929Jayasiri et al. 2019). Pleohelicoon shares similarities with other helicoon-like species by having ellipsoidal to doliiform conidia. However, helicoon-like species have been placed in five different order lineages: Orbiliales, Pleosporales, Pleurotheciales, Tubeufiales, and Venturiales (Linder 1929Lu et al. 2018bJayasiri et al. 2019). Additional molecular data are needed to verify their phylogenetic relationships and establish species delimitation boundaries.

Type species: Pleohelicoon fagi Jayasiri, E.B.G. Jones & K.D. Hyde, Mycosphere 10 (1): 99 (2019).

Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Pleohelicoon.
