Pleogibberella Sacc. ex Berl. & Voglino, in Saccardo, Syll. fung., Addit. I-IV (Abellini): 217 (1886).
Citation when using this data: Perera RH et al. 2023 – Fungalpedia.
Index Fungorum, Facesoffungi, MycoBank, GenBank, Fig 1.
Classification: Nectriaceae, Hypocreales, Hypocreomycetidae, Sordariomycetes, Pezizomycotina, Ascomycota, Fungi.
Saprobic on dead plant parts. Sexual morph: Stromata well-developed, dark purple, becoming black when dry; composed of pigmented, pseudoparenchymatous cells. Ascomata superficial, aggregated on the stroma, globose to pyriform, sometimes collapsing laterally when dry, dark purple, KOH+ black, red-orange in LA, surface scurfy. Paraphyses lacking. Asci 2–3 or 8-spored, clavate, globose-ovate. Ascospores broadly-ellipsoid, muriform, hyaline, smooth-walled. Asexual morph: Undetermined (adapted from Rossman et al. 1999).
Known distribution: Australia (Hansford 1957), Brazil (Rehm 1898), India (Berlese & Voglino 1886; Rossman et al. 1999)
Notes: Pleogibberella species are associated with plant material, including leaves, fruits and dead branches (Hansford 1957; Rossman et al. 1999; Rehm 1898). Only the sexual morph is recorded. No DNA sequence data or living cultures are available (Lombard et al. 2015). Dark coloured ascomata of Pleogibberella are similar to some Fusarium species, while stromatal morphology and peridium characters resemble to Nectria sensu stricto (Rossman et al. 1999).
Type species: Pleogibberella calami (Cooke) Berl. & Voglino [as ‘calamia’], in Saccardo, Syll. fung., Addit. I-IV (Abellini): 217 (1886).
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Pleogibberella.
