Phaeotremellaceae was introduced to accommodate the genus Phaeotremella Rea and the newly described monotypic genus Gelidatrema Yurkov et al. in Liu et al. (2015a). Phaeotremella was treated as the type genus of the family and twelve species were accepted in the genus (Liu et al. 2015a; Spirin et al. 2017). Gelidatrema was proposed for the single species, Cryptococcus spencermartinsiae V. de García et al. by Liu et al. (2015a), and a new species, G. psychrophila M. Tsuji et al. was described in the genus by Tsuji et al. (2017).
