Barr (1979) introduced Phaeosphaeriaceae which comprises 83 genera (Phookamsak et al. 201420172019Wijayawardene et al. 201420172018Hyde et al. 2016Yang et al. 2019Bakhshi et al. 2019Maharachchikumbura et al. 2019Marin-Felix et al. 2019Hongsanan et al. 2020). Species in this family are often necrotrophic pathogens or saprobes on plants (Shoemaker & Babcock 1992Carson 2005Stukenbrock et al. 2006Cannon & Kirk 2007Tibpromma et al. 2017).

Type genus: Phaeosphaeria I. Miyake, Bot. Mag., Tokyo 23: 93 (1909).
