Classification: Chaetothyriaceae, Chaetothyriales, Chaetothyriomycetidae, Eurotiomycetes, PezizomycotinaAscomycota, Fungi

Epiphytic on surface of leaves forming soot-like coatings. Mycelium superficial, dimidiate, brown to dark brown or pale brown, septate, hyphae-like dark brown, reticulate to branched, constricted at the septa. Sexual morph: Ascomata scattered, superficial, globose to subglobose, with depressed central part, cupulate when dry, dull black, lacking setae, ostiole present or absent. Hamathecium of hyaline, aseptate paraphyses or lacking. Asci 4–8-spored, bitunicate, obovoid to oval or oblong-ellipsoid, sessile or short pedicellate, ocular chamber indistinct. Ascospores fasciculate, hyaline or pale brown to brown or olivaceous green, pluriseptate, oblong ellipsoid to reniform or oblong-ellipsoid, multi-septate with transverse septa, slightly constricted at the septa, guttulate or not, mucilaginous sheath present or absent. Asexual morph: Undetermined.

Notes: Hennings (1905) established Phaeosaccardinula with the type species P. diospyricola. This genus is characterized by superficial, globose to subglobose ascomata, with a dark, asetose pellicle, saccate, bitunicate asci and multi-septate, hyaline, brownish ascospores (Batista et al. 1962; Yang et al. 2014). Many of the previously established species of Phaeosaccardinula were later transferred to Limacinula and Treubiomyces (Reynolds 1971, 1983) based on their globose, blackened, glabrous ascomata embedded in subiculum and multi-septate ascospores. However, this genus differs from both genera in lacking ascomatal setae. However, the sexual morph of Camptophora closely resembles Phaeosaccardinula in having globose to subglobose blackened, ascomata lacking setae and ostioles and growing on a soot-like coating. Therefore, we believe Camptophora can be considered as a synonym of Phaeosaccardinula.

Type species: Phaeosaccardinula diospyricola Henn., Hedwigia 44: 67 (1905)

Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Phaeosaccardinula.
