Classification Bionectriaceae, Hypocreales, Hypocreomycetidae, Sordariomycetes, Pezizomycotina, Ascomycota, Fungi.
Bryophilous, biotrophic or necrotrophic, perianthicolous on Frullania species. Sexual morph: Ascomata up to 330 µm in diam., perithecial, occur within the perianths of Frullania, ovoid or pyriform, light yellow to mostly orange or orange red, KOH-, ostiolate, lacking setae, tomentose. Hyphae covering the ascomatal wall white, sometimes cyanophilous. Ostioles punctiform in face view, periphysate, periphyses strongly reacting in CB. Peridium plectenchymatous, thick and compact, of two strata, outer stratum comprising of small cells with merging walls and attenuated, reduced lumina; inner stratum not sharply separated from the outer stratum, composed of extended, angular cells, with cyanophilous walls. Apical paraphyses filamentous, numerous. Asci 8-spored, unitunicate, almost cylindrical, thin-walled, without apical structures. Ascospores narrowly ellipsoidal and 1-septate, or narrowly cylindrical and with 3–7 transvese septa, straight or slightly curved, poor in cytoplasmic content, hyaline with many coloured droplets, sometimes slightly cyanophilous, smooth-walled. Hyphae individual or forming compact plectenchymatous layers, restricted in or between different parts of sporophytic and gametophytic host tissue as superficial, inter- or intracellular mycelia, hyaline, thick-walled. Asexual morph: Conidiomata sporodochial, tubercularia-like, gelatinous, occur at the outer surface of the perianths, one to several, forming small to large filmy layers or cushions 50 or more µm thick, sometimes pustulate and up to 220 µm high, whitish, greyish to brownish. Conidiophores numerous, compact, palisade-like; laterally, dichotomously or verticillately branched; with phialidic end cells. Phialides up to 10 µm long. Conidia 1–2 µm diam., globose to very broadly ellipsoidal, mostly occur singly, rarely in short rows of 2 or 3, hyaline (adapted from Döbbeler and Davison 2018).
Known distribution: USA., Europe (Döbbeler and Davison 2018)
Notes: Döbbeler and Davison (2018) introduced Periantria to accommodate two bryophilous taxa: Periantria bellacaptiva and Periantria frullaniae, and placed in Bionectriaceae. The light yellow to orange or orange red, KOH-, ascomata of Periantria are typical of Bionectriaceae. No DNA data are available; thus, its placement needs verifying with molecular data.
Type species: Periantria frullaniae (Racov.) Döbbeler & P.G. Davison, Nova Hedwigia 106(1-2): 247 (2017) [2018].
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Periantria.
