Payosphaeria W.F. Leong, in Leong et al., Bot. Mar. 33: 511 (1990).

Citation when using this data: Perera RH et al. 2023 – Fungalpedia.

Index Fungorum, Facesoffungi, MycoBank, GenBank, Fig 1.

Classification: Incertae sedis, Hypocreales, Hypocreomycetidae, Sordariomycetes, Pezizomycotina, Ascomycota, Fungi.

Saprobic on submerged mangrove wood blocks and driftwood, in marine habitats. Sexual morph: Ascomata perithecial, solitary to gregarious, superficial, globose to pyriform, papillate, membranous, hyaline, subhyaline to yellowish brown, ostiolate. Ostioles lack periphyses. Ascomatal neck cylindrical, hyaline, stout. Peridium of single stratum, up to 8 µm thick, composed of thin-walled, elongate cells. Paraphyses not abundant, branched, septate, hyaline. Asci 8-spored, unitunicate, long-cylindrical, short pedicellate, persistent, thin-walled, developing at the base of the ascomata. Ascospores uniseriate, round to oval, aseptate, guttuale, hyaline, thin-, smooth-walled, without appendages or gelatinous sheath. Asexual morph: Undetermined.

Notes: Leong (1990) erected this monospecific genus for lignicolous taxon Payosphaeria minuta, without assigning it to any order. Payosphaeria minuta usually associated with submerged mangrove wood (Avicennia alba, A. lanata and Rhizophora apiculata) and, driftwood (Leong 1990). No sequence data are available. We could not observe the 3% KOH reaction of ascomata, as we received permanent slides of herbarium material.

Type species: Payosphaeria minuta H.Y.M. Leung, in Leong, Tan, Hyde & Jones, Bot. Mar. 33: 511 (1990).

Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Payosphaeria.
