Paraepicoccum was introduced by Matsushima (1993) to accommodate a saprobic fungus P. amazonense. Diederich et al. (2024) introduced two new species, P. hypotrachynae and P. ocellulariae, which are lichenicolous fungi. This genus is characterized by dark brown to blackish colonies forming flattened sporodochia. The conidiophores are relatively short, simple or branched, subhyaline to pale olivaceous or golden brown, smooth, and septate, with one or several apical conidiogenous loci. The conidiogenous cells are monoblastic and integrated, producing dry, ellipsoidal to subspherical conidia. These conidia are smooth and pale brown when young, becoming brown and submuriform with several longitudinal or oblique septa. They are slightly to distinctly flattened and possess a subhyaline to pale brown basal cell.
To date, three species are recognized in Paraepicoccum, two of which are lichenicolous. Phylogenetic analysis based on multi-gene (LSU, SSU, ITS, RPB2, TEF1α) by Thambugala et al. (2017) indicated that Paraepicoccum should be placed in Pleosporineae (Pleosporales). However, no specific family has been identified. Therefore, this genus is tentatively placed within Pleosporales genera incertae sedis.
Type species: Paraepicoccum amazonense Matsush. (Matsushima 1993)
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Paraepicoccum
