Classification: Arthoniales genera incertae sedis, Arthoniomycetes, Pezizomycotina, Ascomycota, Fungi
Paradoxomyces was introduced by Matzer (1996) to describe the only species Paradoxomyces nymanii, which grows on Strigula nitidula. This genus is characterized by lirellate, black ascomata with a unique, well-developed, carbonaceous lateral exciple. Asci are fissitunicate, subglobose, shortly stipitate, and contain eight hyaline, obovoid, smooth, muriform ascospores with rounded ends. Kirk et al. (2008) placed it within Arthoniaceae, while Diederich et al. (2018a) classified Paradoxomyces within Arthoniales genera incertae sedis (Kirk et al. 2008, Diederich et al. 2018a). As no available sequences, Paradoxomyces was tentatively placed in Arthoniales genera incertae sedis by Hyde et al. (2024).
Type species: Paradoxomyces nymanii Matzer, on Strigula nitidula (Matzer 1996)
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Paradoxomyces
