Index Fungorum, Facesoffungi, MycoBank, GenBank.

Classification: PezizalesPezizomycetidae,, PezizomycetesPezizomycotinaAscomycota, Fungi

Taxa are mainly saprobic on soil or dead plant material. Some form mycorrhizal associations. Ascomata are frequently epigeous apothecia cupulate to ear-shaped, sub-stipitate, leathery, glabrous outer surface, some are cleistothecial (Hansen et al. 2013; Leuchtmann and Cle´menc¸on 2012; Liu and Zhuang 2006). Asci are inamyloid and arising from croziers. Ascospores are mostly ellipsoid and guttulate (Hansen et al. 2013; Leuchtmann and Cle´menc¸on 2012; Liu and Zhuang 2006). Asexual morphs are hyphomycetous and polyblastic (Jaklitsch et al. 2016). Recent studies are by Leuchtmann and Cle´menc¸on (2012), Hansen et al. (2013), Hawksworth (2013), Olariaga et al. (2015) and Ekanayaka et al. (2016a), Hyde et al. (2017a, b).

Type genus: Otidea (Pers.) Bonord., Handb. Allgem. Mykol. (Stuttgart): 205 (1851).
