Fungalpedia – Note 3245, Orbiliaceae

Orbiliaceae Nannf.

Citation when using this data: Zhang SN et al. 2024 – Fungalpedia.

Index Fungorum, Faceoffungi, MycoBank, GenBank.

Notes: Members of Orbiliaceae are characterized by having small, usually light-colored (rarely dark), and semi-translucent apothecia, frequently swollen paraphysis apices, with asci and ascospores which usually contain KOH-soluble spore bodies (SBs), and a refractive vacuolar organelle inside the ascospores which is only visible in living spores. The family has been assigned to the order Helotiales in the traditional classification system, but molecular evidence supports placement of Orbiliaceae in Orbiliales, Orbiliomycetes (Eriksson et al. 2003; Shao et al. 2018).

Type genus: Orbilia Fr.

Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Orbiliaceae.
