Classification: Incertae sedis, Incertae sedis, Incertae sedis, Incertae sedis, Pezizomycotina, Ascomycota, Fungi.
Notes: The genus Ophiodendron was established by Arnaud (1952), and typified by O. laocooni based on morphological data. However, O. laocooni did not conform to the 35.1 and 39.1 rules in Melbourne, so this species is considered invalid (McNeill et al. 2012; Index Fungorum 2024). Based on the previously published photograph, we classify it as a helicosporous taxon. Ophiodendron laocooni is characterized by simple, aseptate, hyaline conidia that are erect when young, forming few branches, and becoming flat to tightly coiled at the apex upon maturation (Arnaud 1952). Further collections are needed to confirm its taxonomic position.
Type species: Ophiodendron laocooni G. Arnaud, Bulletin de la Société Mycologique de France 68: 208 (1952).
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Ophiodendron.
