Jaklitsch & Voglmayr (2016) established Nigrogranaceae in Pleosporales to accommodate Nigrograna based on phylogeny and morphology. Members of this family are characterized by immersed-erumpent to superficial ascomata, papillate to cylindrical ostiolar necks, clavate, bitunicate, fissitunicate asci, fusoid to narrowly ellipsoid 1–3-euseptate and pale to chocolate brown ascospores (Jaklitsch & Voglmayr 2016).

Type genus: Nigrograna Gruyter, Verkley & Crous, in Gruyter, Woudenberg, Aveskamp, Verkley, Groenewald & Crous, Stud. Mycol. 75: 31 (2012) [2013].
