Neomassariaceae was introduced by Ariyawansa et al. (2018) to place the Neomassaria as the type genus. The members of Neomassariaceae differ from Massariaceae species in having small globose to subglobose ascomata, small asci lacking a refractive ring and small, hyaline,
1-septate ascospores (Ariyawansa et al. 2018, Hongsanan et al. 2020a).

Type genus: Neomassaria Mapook, Camporesi & K.D. Hyde, in Hyde et al., Fungal Diversity 80: 74 (2016).
