Index Fungorum, Faceoffungi, MycoBank, GenBank.

Classification: Chaetosphaeriales, Sordariomycetidae, Sordariomycetes, Pezizomycotina, Ascomycota, Dikarya, Fungi.

Saprobic on culm of herbaceous plants. Sexual morph: Ascomata solitary, immersed, brown to black, coriaceous, subglobose to depressed globose, ostiolate, clypeate. Peridium composed of dark brown to black cells of textura angularis that emerging with the host epidermal cells outwardly. Hamathecium of numerous, branched, septate, cellular paraphyses. Asci unitunicate, broadly cylindrical, pedicellate, with a J-, wedge-shaped, subapical ring. Ascospores fasciculate, fusiform, C-shaped or sigmoid, non-septate, ends acute, guttulate. Asexual morph: Undetermined.

Notes: Neoleptosporellaceae is established to accommodate Neolepotosporella species. Neoleptosporellaceae is phylogenetically close to Helminthosphaeriaceae with moderate bootstrap support (Zhang JF et al. 2023). However, it is differentiated from Helminthosphaeriaceae as the latter is characterized by superficial or immersed ascomata that are rough, tuberculate, smooth or with setae, and a peridium of carbonaceous or membranaceous cells of textura angularis or textura prismatica, cylindrical to clavate, pedicellate asci with a truncate apex and J-, apical ring, and hyaline or pigmented, allantoid, clavate, cylindrical to ellipsoid ascospores with 0–3-septa, arranged in ascus as 2-seriate.

Type genus: Neoleptosporella Phukhams. & K.D. Hyde.

Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Neoleptosporellaceae.
