Classification: Tubeufiaceae, Tubeufiales, Incertae sedis, Dothideomycetes, Pezizomycotina, Ascomycota, Fungi.
Saprobic on dead culm of unidentified herbaceous plant. Sexual morph: Ascomata superficial, solitary or scattered, globose to subglobose, black, setaceous, coriaceous, with a central ostiole. Setae covering the whole ascoma, dark brown to black, tapering towards the apex. Peridium composed of several layers of cells of textura angularis. Hamathecium comprising branched pseudoparaphyses, anastomosing between and above the asci. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, fissitunicate, cylindrical to clavate, short pedicellate. Ascospores fasciculate, filiform to narrowly fusiform, hyaline, tapered toward the ends, slightly wider at the central, guttulate, 9-septate, not constricted at the septa. Asexual morph: Undetermined.
Notes: Neodictyospora is placed within Tubeufiaceae as an independent clade sister to Camporesiomyces (Zhang JF et al. 2023). Both of these genera are characterized by setaceous, globose to subglobose ascomata, and clavate asci. However, Camporesiomyces has multi-loculate ascomata that produce cylindrical ascospores, while Neodictyospora has uni-loculate ascomata with narrowly fusiform ascospores (Hyde et al. 2020b). Neodictyospora is morphologically close to the sexual morph of Dictyospora with both having uni-loculate, globose to subglobose ascomata surrounded by short, dark brown to black setae, but they can be distinguished by the shape of ascospores (Brahmanage et al. 2017; Lu et al. 2018b) and phylogenetic distance (Zhang JF et al. 2023). Based on a megablast search of NCBI’s GenBank nucleotide database, the closest hits using the LSU sequence had highest similarity to Helicosporium luteosporum (MFLUCC 16-0266, GenBank KY321327; identities = 830/843 (98%), 1 gap (0%)), Tubeufia cerea (IF0914, GenBank AY849964; identities = 831/849 (98%), 1 gap (0%)) and Camporesiomyces mali (KUMCC 19-0126, GenBank MN792811; identities = 828/849 (98 %), 1 gap (0%)). Closest hits using the ITS sequence had highest similarity to Camporesiomyces vaccinii (CBS 216.90, GenBank NR_156202; identities = 288/319 (90%), 11 gaps (3%)), Helicosporium luteosporum (MFLUCC 16-0266, GenBank KY321324; identities = 283/321 (88 %), 17 gaps (5%)) and Zaanenomyces quadripartis (CBS 148310, GenBank OK664721; identities = 279/320 (87 %), 11 gaps (3%)). Closest hits using the TEF1-α sequence had highest similarity to Camporesiomyces mali (KUMCC 19-0126, GenBank MN794018; identities = 822/890 (92%), 2 gaps (0%)), Tubeufia hyalospora (MFLUCC 15-1250, GenBank MH550979; identities = 820/890 (92%), 6 gaps (0%)) and Neohelicosporium aquaticum (MFLUCC 17-1519, GenBank MF535242; identities = 817/889 (92%), 4 gaps (0%)). Closest hits using the Rpb2 sequence had highest similarity to Dematiohelicosporum guttulatum (MFLUCC 17-2011, GenBank MH551021; identities = 800/1012 (79%), 6 gaps (0%)). Based on the above evidence, Neodictyospora is introduced as a new genus to accommodate the type species Neodictyospora karsti.
Type species: Neodictyospora karsti J.F. Zhang, Jian K. Liu & K.D. Hyde.
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Neodictyospora.
