Fungalpedia – Note 2913, Neoburgoa

Neoburgoa Diederich, E. Zimm. & Lawrey.

Index Fungorum, Faceoffungi, MycoBank, GenBank, Fig 1.

Classification: Hydnaceae, Cantharellales, Agaricomycetes, Agaricomycotina, Basidiomycota, Fungi.

Neoburgoa was introduced by Lawrey et al. (2016) based on phylogenetic analysis using LSU sequence to describe the type species N. freyi, found on Cladonia rangiferina. The genus is characterized by yellow to orange bulbils, either immersed or superficial, roundish to ellipsoid, and measuring 150–300(–700) µm in diameter. The bulbils consist of thick-walled, polyhedral cells (10–20 µm in diameter), and lack of clamps within the bulbils, though they are present in culture. Hyde et al. (2024) accepted the placement of Neoburgoa within the Hydnaceae. There are 18 sequences belonging to six gene loci in GenBank.

Type species: Neoburgoa freyi Diederich, Zimmermann & Lawrey (Lawrey et al. 2016).

Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Neoburgoa.
