Neobuelliellaceae was introduced by Hongsanan et al. (2020b) to accommodate Neobuelliella Hongsanan & K.D. Hyde. In the phylogenetic analysis based on LSU and SSU of Dai et al. (2018), two strains of Neobuelliella poetschii formed a distinct clade separate from Stictographaceae, and sister to Hemigraphaceae. Then Neobuelliellaceae was introduced to accommodate this clade. The lichenicolous family is characterized by apothecioid ascomata which are dispersed over the host thallus as black dots, grouped, rounded, globose when young, oval when mature. Excipulum is dark brown, K+ greenish-brown, and the discs are olive-brown. Hamathecium is composed of branched, anastomosing, cellular pseudoparaphyses, capitate at apical and intercalary cells with pigment, thick at tips, with dark-brown pigment. Asci are bitunicate, fissitunicate, cylindrical, 4–6-spored. Ascospores are long, cells rounded, the upper cell sometimes tapered, hyaline, later ± brown, 1-septate, clearly constricted at the septa, thin-walled (Ertz et al. 2015a, Dai et al. 2018, Hongsanan et al. 2020b).

Type genus : Neobuelliella Hongsanan & K.D. Hyde.

Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Neobuelliellaceae
