Neobaryopsis was introduced by Flakus et al. (2019) based on a phylogenetic analysis of SSU, LSU, RPB1, RPB2, and TEF1α sequence data. The analysis strongly supported the placement of this genus within Cordycipitaceae, distinguishing it as a unique group among lichenicolous fungi similar to Neobarya. The type species, Neobaryopsis andensis, is currently the only member of the genus and is found on the thallus of Lobariella.
Neobaryopsis andensis is characterized by narrowly pyriform, yellowish to orange perithecioid ascomata that develop on a reduced, white, arachnoid subiculum. The ascospores are large, needle-shaped, and contain 50–90 septa. The asexual morph produces a hyaline to pink or yellowish-orange conidial mass with a white stipe. The conidiophores are branched, bearing large phialides, and the conidia are hyaline, ranging from ellipsoidal to obovoid in shape.
Type species: Neobaryopsis andensis Flakus, Etayo, Kukwa & Rodr. Flakus, on Lobariella (Flakus et al. 2019b)
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Neobaryopsis.
