Classification: Bambusicolaceae, Pleosporales, Pleosporomycetidae, Dothideomycetes, Pezizomycotina, Ascomycota, Fungi.

Saprobic on dead rachides and petioles of palms. Sexual morph Ascomata deeply immersed to erumpent, solitary, scattered, pale brown to black; in section depressed globose to hemisphaerical, rarely stromatic, unilocular or multilocular, with an ostiole or papilla. Ostiole central or lateral, periphysate. Peridium thicker towards the ostiole, thinner at both sides and the base, composed of cells of textura angularis and textura intricata. Hamathecium trabeculate pseudoparaphyses, anastomosing and embedded in a gelatinous matrix. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, cylindric-clavate, with a short pedicel. Ascospores overlapping 1−2-seriate, fusiform, hyaline, 1-septate, guttulate, surrounded by a mucilaginous sheath. Asexual morph See Crous et al. (2014b), de Silva et al. (2022b).

Notes: Crous et al. (2014b) introduced Neobambusicola, which was isolated from necrotic leaves associated with Strelitzia nicolai (Strelitziaceae) leaves with infections of Phyllachora strelitziae, and represented by an asexual morph with fusoid-ellipsoid, hyaline, 1-septate conidia, and subglobose to subcylindrical, aseptate microconidia. Phookamsak et al. (2019) introduced Neobambusicola brunnea (MFLU 18-1393) based on phylogenetic analyses of a concatenated dataset of LSU and ITS sequences. However, it was subsequently transferred to Anthosulcatispora (as A. brunnea) supported by a multi-gene phylogeny including SSU and tef1α sequences (Phukhamsakda et al. 2020). De Silva (2022b) introduced Neobambusicola magnoliae, which was also a coelomycetous morph and resembles N. strelitziae in having similar microconidia. The new species, N. palmae, that we describe, is represented by a sexual morph and phylogenetically formed a well-supported sister branch to N. magnoliae (Fig. 58; Zhang SN et al. 2024). Nevertheless, the clade of Neobambusicola (N. magnoliae, N. strelitziae and N. palmae) is moderately supported in the single gene and multi-gene phylogeny (Fig. 58; Zhang SN et al. 2024), which may be due to there being available only LSU and ITS sequences for the generic type N. strelitziae. Further collections of members of this genus are needed to better understand the phylogenetic relationships between Neobambusicola and other genera in Sulcatisporaceae.

Type species: Neobambusicola strelitziae Crous and M.J. Wingf.

Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Neobambusicola.
