Notes: Neoacanthostigma was established by Boonmee et al. (2014) based on asexual-sexual morphological characteristics and molecular data. Index Fungorum (2024) records eight species of Neoacanthostigma. Among them, N. aquaticum, N. brunneisporum, N. filiforme, N. guangxiense, N. latisporum, N. septoconstrictum, and N. thailandicum were transferred to Acanthotubeufia and Berkleasmium based on molecular and morphological evidence (Lu et al. 2017c, 2018b). To date, the only accepted species in Neoacanthostigma is the type species, N. fusiforme (Lu and Kang 2020). The helicosporous asexual morph of N. fusiforme was found in sexual cultures (Boonmee et al. 2014), characterized by monoblastic, holoblastic, integrated, sympodial, cylindrical, hyaline, and smooth-walled conidiogenous cells, arising as lateral branches from creeping hyphae, sometimes truncate at the apex, and solitary, acrogenous, helicoid, indistinctly multi-septate, guttulate, hyaline conidia that are mostly rounded at the tips, with the conidial filament being loosely coiled (Boonmee et al. 2014; Lu et al. 2018b). Conidiophores are usually absent. The asexual Neoacanthostigma resembles Neohelicomyces but these two taxa are phylogenetically distinct genera within Tubeufiaceae (Lu et al. 2018b; Ma et al. 2023b).
Type species: Neoacanthostigma fusiforme Boonmee, Bhat & K.D. Hyde, Fungal Diversity 68 (1): 279 (2014).
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Neoacanthostigma.
