Classification: Hypocreales, Hypocreomycetidae, Sordariomycetes, Pezizomycotina, Ascomycota, Fungi
The family was established by Tulasne & Tulasne (1865) and typified by Nectria. Members of this family are nectria-related fungi possessing brightly pigmented ascomata with fusiform to allantoid ascospores and globose to fusiform phialidic conidia (Rossman 2000, Lombard et al. 2015, Yang et al. 2019b). These fungi can be endophytic, foliicolous or saprobic on the bark of recently dead woody substrates. Some are entomogenous in terrestrial and aquatic habitats and a few species are human pathogens (Rossman et al. 1999, Lombard et al. 2015). They have worldwide distribution and have higher diversity in warm temperate and tropical regions (Rossman et al. 1999, Rossman 2000, Yang et al. 2019b). In a recent treatment of Sordariomycetes Hyde et al. (2020c) accepted 69 genera in Nectriaceae.
Type genus: Nectria (Fr.) Fr., Summa veg. Scand., Sectio Post. (Stockholm): 387 (1849).
