Classification: Dothideomycetes genera incertae sedis, Pezizomycotina, Ascomycota, Fungi

Myxophora was established by Döbbeler (1978) to accommodate the type species Myxophora amerospora Döbbeler & Poelt which grows on Campylium haller from Austria, and it was initially placed in Dimeriaceae. However, the family name Dimeriaceae was placed in Fungi incertae sedis according to MycoBank (2025). Diederich et al. (2018a) assigned this genus to Pseudoperisporiaceae Toro, we believe further study is needed once molecular data becomes available. Hyde et al. (2024) placed this genus within Dothideomycetes genera incertae sedis.

This genus is characterized by ovoid or spherical, dark brown to mostly black ascomata, filiform paraphysoid, bitunicate, subcylindrical asci contracted into short stalk with 8-spored, and ellipsoidal, unicellular, colorless spores with homogeneous content or adorned with a large single guttule (Döbbeler 1978). Hoffman et al. (2000) published five lichenicolous species, including four new species: Myxophora apotheciicola grows on Leptogium azureum, M. ovalispora and M. tetraspora grow on Collema, M. placynthii grows on Placynthium caesium, and one combination M. leptogiophia grows on Collema and Leptogium plicatile (Hoffmann et al. 2000).

Type species: Myxophora amerospora Döbbeler & Poelt.

Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Myxophora.
