Classification: Ascomycota genera incertae sedis, Fungi.
The monotypic genus Minutophoma was introduced by Hawksworth (1981b) to describe the lichenicolous coelomycete M. chrysophthalmae, which occurs on the apothecia of Chrysothrix chrysophthalmae. The genus is characterized by black, half-immersed, globose to subglobose pycnidia with walls composed of thick-walled, dark brown cells that form a textura angularis. The upper cells disassociate, creating an irregular ostiole. The conidiogenous cells are ampulliform, phialidic, and hyaline, while the conidia are non-catenate, subcylindrical, hyaline, and minute (Hawksworth 1981b). Although originally placed in Sphaeropsidales, its phylogenetic status remains uncertain pending molecular data.
Type species: Minutophoma chrysophthalmae D. Hawksw.
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Minutophoma.
