The sexual, saprobic genus Microascospora is phylogenetically distinct from other genera in Melanconiellaceae. Species have comparatively small ascospores (< 20 µm long) with wavy, filiform, long appendages. Sphaeronaemella fragariae (previously placed in Microascales incertae sedis) clustered with Microascospora rubi and not with other Sphaeronaemella species (incertae sedis in MicroascalesSenanayake et al. 2017a). Therefore, S. fragariae was excluded from Sphaeronaemella and accommodated in Microascospora as M. fragariae (Senanayake et al. 2017a).

Type species: Microascospora rubi Senan., Camporesi & K.D. Hyde

Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Microascospora.
