Melanconiella is restricted to recently dead corticated branches. The genus is hostspecific to the plant family Betulaceae as saprobes (Senanayake et al. 2018). Voglmayr et al. (2012) revised Melanconiella using herbarium material and recently collected specimens. The dissimilarities in morphology and phylogeny of Melanconiella and Melanconis were discussed by Voglmayr et al. (2012). See Crous et al. (2016b) and Senanayake et al. (2018) for further details. Melanconiella spodiaea is illustrated in this entry.

Type species: Melanconiella spodiaea (Tul.) Sacc.

Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Melanconiella.
