Megacapitulaceae was recently introduced by Rajeshkumar et al. (2024) to accommodate its type genus Megacapitula, which was formerly considered incertae sedis within Pleosporales. The authors designated a lectotype based on illustrations of the original material and provided a sequenced epitype. Their phylogenetic analysis, based on a combined dataset of LSU, SSU, ITS, tef-1α, and rpb2, revealed a distinct placement of the Megacapitulaceae clade within Pleosporales, closely related to Phaeoseptaceae. Megacapitulaceae is characterized by a hyphomycetous asexual morph, with micronematous to semi-macronematous conidiophores that are smooth, roughened, or verrucose; integrated conidiogenous cells; and holoblastic, solitary, muriform, pigmented conidia with apical hair-like appendages.

Type genus: Megacapitula J.L. Chen & Tzean, Mycological Research 97: 347 (1993).
