Magnaporthales was established, based on phylogeny, by Thongkantha et al. (2009) to accommodate the family Magnaporthaceae. Klaubauf et al. (2014) resolved the natural polyphyletic placement of Pyricularia, and defined two families Ophioceraceae and Pyriculariaceae within Magnaporthales on the basis of morphological and phylogenetic analysis. Hongsanan et al. (2017) provided an update phylogeny of Sordariomycetes based on morphology and molecular clock evidence, and accommodated Pseudohalonectriaceae under Magnaporthales. Subsequently, Luo et al. (2019) introduced the fifth family Ceratosphaeriaceae into Magnaporthales, and all five genera were accepted by Hyde et al. (2020c) and Wijayawardene et al. (2022a).
Type family: Magnaporthaceae P.F. Cannon.
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Magnaporthales.
