Classification: Nectriaceae, Hypocreales, Hypocreomycetidae, Sordariomycetes, Pezizomycotina, Ascomycota, Fungi.
Fungicolous, parasitic on stromata of other ascomycetes growing on herbaceous plants or deciduous trees. Sexual morph: Stromata inconspicous or absent. Ascomata 100–250 μm high, perithecial, solitary, subglobose, with a small papilla or apapillate, become cupulate upon drying, orange to carmine red, KOH+ dark red to violet, sometimes hyphal hairs arising from the ascomatal surface. Paraphyses lacking. Asci 8-spored, unitunicate, cylindrical to narrowly clavate, apex simple. Ascospores uniseriate or partially biseriate, 1-septate, yellowish, smooth-walled or becoming striate when mature. Asexual morph: Conidiophores initially occurring as lateral phialides on somatic hyphae, become monochasial to verticillate, hyaline. Conidiogenous cells monophialidic, cylindrical to subulate, hyaline. Microconidia absent or sparse, when present ellipsoidal to allantoid, hyaline. Macroconidia subcylindrical to curved, 3–7(–14)-septate, apical cell conical or hooked, basal cell poorly to well-developed, footshaped, hyaline. Chlamydospores absent or rare, globose, single, held in pairs or chains in hyphae (adapted from Gräfenhan et al. 2011).
Notes: Gräfenhan et al. (2011) established Macroconia based on Nectria leptosphaeriae and four other taxa, which were hitherto treated in Cosmospora, Fusarium and Nectria. Macroconia is phylogenetically closely related to Fusicolla and entomogenous group Microcera (present study Perera RH et al. 2023; Lombard et al. 2015).
