     The family Lyophyllaceae was established by Jülich (1981). The members of the family are found all over the world. However, the majority of species are found in the northern temperate and arctic regions. The presence of clamp connections on all hyphae and the presence of siderophilous granules in basidia, detected by aceto-carmine treatment, are the most important characteristics of the family (Kühner 1938; Jülich 1981; Kalamees 2004). Singer (1986) classified this group as the Lyophylleae tribe of the Tricholomataceae. Recent multigene phylogenetic analyses established the monophyly of Lyophyllaceae (Sánchez-Garca et al. 2014; Bellanger et al. 2015).

     Type species: Lyophyllum P. Karst.
