Saprobic on wood Sexual morph: Ascomata superficial or partly immersed in wood, globose to subglobose, ostiolate, coriaceous, dark brown or black. Papilla or neck cylindrical, straight or irregular. Peridium two layered; outer layer composed of small, polygonal or irregular dark cells; inner layer composed of flat or rhomboid hyaline cells. Hamathecium absent; immature ascomata filled with a pseudoparenchyma of polygonal, thin-walled and hyaline cells. Asci 8-spored, fusiform, curved, thin-walled, unitunicate, deliquescing early. Ascospores filiform, hyaline, 1-septate, with a conical chamber at each end, releasing mucus from the tip. Asexual morph: Hyphomycetous, conidiogenous cells short, light to dark brown, septate, simple, conidia coiled, solitary, septate, constricted at the septa, fuscous to black.

Notes – Lulwoana was introduced by Campbell et al. (2005) for a Lulworthia uniseptata strain which did not group with the Type species of Lulworthia (L. fucicola). Lulwoana uniseptata was collected on wood at Shimoda, Japan, with Zalerion maritima as its asexual morph (Nakagiri 1984). This was later confirmed by Campbell et al. (2005) and Jones et al. (2008). Phylogenetically supported by 18S, 28S and ITS rDNA datasets.

Type species: Lulwoana uniseptata (Nakagiri) Kohlm., Volkm-Kohlm., J. Campb., Spatafora & Gräfenhan, Mycol. Res. 109(5): 562 (2005).

Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Lulwoana.
