Classification: Rhytismataceae, Rhytismatales, Leotiomycetidae, Leotiomycetes, Pezizomycotina, Ascomycota, Fungi.
Notes: Lophodermium is one of the species-rich genera in Rhytismataceae, and comprises species particularly on conifers, Pinus, and grasses (Minter 1981; Lantz et al. 2011). Johnston (2001) provided a global revision of Lophodermium species on monocotyledons, with descriptions, keys and photographs of microscopic characteristics of all accepted species. Morphologically, Lophodermium resembles Coccomyces and Hypoderma in Rhytismataceae. Lophodermium and Hypoderma have elliptical ascomata opening with a single slit, while Coccomyces has circular or angular ascomata opening with several teeth. Additionally, Lophodermium has filiform spores, but Hypoderma has cylindrical, bifusiform or fusiform spores (Lantz et al. 2011). Phylogenetic studies have revealed that these three genera are highly polyphyletic, with Lophodermium present in three major clades and the type L. arundinaceum forming a strongly supported clade with mostly grass-associated species (Johnston 2001; Lantz et al. 2011; Johnston et al. 2019).
Type species: Lophodermium arundinaceum (Schrad.) Chevall.
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Lophodermium.
