Classification: Ascomycota genera incertae sedis, Fungi.

Lichenostella was introduced by Calatayud et al. (1999b) to describe the conidial fungus L. hypotrachynae, found on Hypotrachyna. The genus is characterized by black, sporodochial colonies with macronematous, subcylindrical conidiophores that are hyaline to brown, straight, and simple or branched, often septate. Brown setae, which sometimes function as conidiophores, are also present. The conidiogenous cells are monoblastic, or rarely polyblastic, and can be terminal or intercalary. The conidia are dry, non-catenate, star-like (staurospores), with septate arms (Calatayud et al. 1999b). Due to the lack of molecular data, Lichenostella is tentatively placed within Ascomycota genera incertae sedis (Hyde et al. 2024).

Type species: Lichenostella hypotrachynae Etayo & Calat. (Calatayud et al. 1999b).

Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Lichenostella.
