Lichenopyrenis was established by Calatayud et al. (2001d) to accommodate the cecidiogenous species Lichenopyrenis galligena parasitic on the lichen Leptochidium albociliatum. The genus is characterized by perithecioid, black, globose ascomata, hyaline, vide, septate hamathecium filaments, clavate asci and ellipsoidal, 1-distoseptate, pale brown, thick-walled ascospores (Calatayud et al. 2001d). So far, the type species is the only species in this genus and also a lichenicolous fungus.
Type species: Lichenopyrenis galligena Calat., M.J. Sanz & Aptroot, on Leptochidium albociliatum
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Lichenopyrenis
