Lichenophoma was introduced by Keissler (1911) for a presumed lichenicolous coelomycete, L. haematommatis, found on Haematomma elatinum. Hawksworth (1981b) reviewed this genus and species and mentioned that the type material was not located in W (U. Passauer, in litt.) except the notes by Sutton (1977: 113–114). He did not find any fungus on Haematomma elatinum which could be identical with Keissler’s taxon. Hawksworth et al. (2006a) re-examined this species from Keissler’s collections Loxospora elatinum located in Austria and determined that the species was not lichenicolous but rather a sorediate lichen species of Cliostomum. Due to the absence of holotype, Keissler’s name is neotypified based on one of his later collections from the original locality. As a result, this species was synonymized with Cliostomum haematommatis by Hawksworth (2006a). Additionally, L. arecae, was found on leaves of Areca catechru from Taiwan by Sawada (1959). Lichenophoma opegraphae, the only lichenicolous species still kept in this genus, was found on the thallus of Opegrapha subsiderella by Vouaux (1914a). Due to the lack of molecular, it is tentatively placed within Ascomycota genera incertae sedis (Hyde et al. 2024).
Type species: Lichenophoma haematommatis Keissl. (Keissler 1911).
Accepted species: Lichenophoma opegraphae Vouaux, on Opegrapha subsiderella. (Vouaux 1914a).
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Lichenophoma.
