Classification: Hypocreales genera incertae sedis, Hypocreomycetidae, Sordariomycetes, Pezizomycotina, Ascomycota, Fungi.
The monotypic genus Lichenopenicillus was introduced by Etayo (2017) to accommodate the type species L. versicolor, found on the thalli of Sticta species. The genus is characterized by pencil-shaped synnemata that are yellow, blackish, and purple at the base. The conidiophores are hyaline, branched and anastomosing, with cylindrical, terminal or lateral conidiogenous cells. The conidia are acicular, septate, dry, and hyaline, with holoblastic conidiogenesis and schizolytic secession (Etayo 2017). Due to the lack of molecular data, Lichenopenicillus is tentatively placed within Hypocreales genera incertae sedis (Hyde et al. 2024).
Type species: Lichenopenicillus versicolor Etayo (Etayo 2017).
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Lichenopenicillus.
