Classification: Hypocreales genera incertae sedis, Hypocreomycetidae, Sordariomycetes, Pezizomycotina, Ascomycota, Fungi
Leptobarya was introduced by Etayo (2017) to accommodate two species resembling Neobarya but differing in several critical features. Leptobarya is distinguished by its well-developed, persistent paraphyses with free apices; ampulliform, unitunicate, polysporous asci with a small apical thickening; and vermiform, spiraled, curved, unicellular ascospores that fragment within the ascus. Although Etayo (2017) did not assign this genus to a specific taxonomic group, he highlighted the need to clarify its relationship to Lichenobarya or Neobarya, both within Hypocreales. Consequently, Leptobarya was provisionally placed in Hypocreales as genera incertae sedis, pending molecular data available (Hyde et al. 2024).
Type species: Leptobarya nigra Etayo.
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Leptobarya.
