Classification Bionectriaceae, Hypocreales, Hypocreomycetidae, Sordariomycetes, Pezizomycotina, Ascomycota, Fungi.
Bryophilous, parasitic on Frullania kunzei. Sexual morph: Ascomata up to 300 µm diam., perithecial, astromatic, immersed between host leaves, ovoid to pyriform, laterally collapsing and becoming colourless upon drying, light orange to orange or white, KOH-, tomentose (covered with coarse hairs and setae), usually with a fringy apical ring, apex glabrous, ostiolate. Ostioles tiny, central, at times covered by gelatinous material. Ostiolar canal lined with periphyses of short, tapering filaments. Setae or hairs, very short, straight or curved, concentrated around the apex. Peridium in optical section composed of flattened, tangentially stretched cells, cells in surface view textura angularis. Apical paraphyses present, septate, hyaline. Asci 8-spored, unitunicate, numerous, subcylindrical to clavate, straight or slightly curved, sessile or with a rather long, thick foot, very thin-walled, without an apical ring. Ascospores mostly bi-seriate or irregularly arranged, aseptate or mostly 1-septate, bacilliform, usually symmetrical, septum thin or not distinguishable, sometimes guttulate, colourless. Asexual morph: Undetermined (adapted from Döbbeler and Davison 2018).
Known distribution: USA (Döbbeler and Davison 2018)
Notes: Döbbeler and Davison (2018) described Laniatria with the only species L. myxostoma, a bryophilous species with bright coloured ascomata, not changing colour in KOH or lactic acid. Laniatria lacked cyanophilous structures, which are typical of other bryophyllous taxa in Bionectriaceae (Döbbeler and Davison 2018). No DNA molecular data are available; thus, its placement needs verifying.
Type species: Laniatria myxostoma Döbbeler & P.G. Davison, Nova Hedwigia 106(1-2): 239 (2017) [2018].
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Laniatria.
