Lacrymospora was introduced by Aptroot (1991) to accommodate the single lichenicolous species L. parasitica, which parasitizes the thallus of a lichenized ascomycete. This genus is distinguished by hemispherical, exposed ascocarps with a fully carbonized wall and a black, obconical ostiole. The hamathecium is gelatinized and contains oil droplets. The asci are elongate, possess a rounded ocular chamber, and are eight-spored. Ascospores are uniseriate, brown, bicolored, ellipsoidal with rounded ends, and asymmetrically distoseptate. The asexual morph includes black pycnidia with a carbonized wall in the upper part, producing acro-pleurogenous, filiform conidia. When Lacrymospora was established, Aptroot (1991) assigned it to Requienellaceae, and Hyde et al. (2024) accepted this placement. However, due to the absence of available molecular data, its phylogenetic placement remains uncertain and requires further study for confirmation.
Type species: Lacrymospora parasitica Aptroot, on Myriotrema (Aptroot 1991)
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Lacrymospora.
