Saprobic on submerged wood in marine habitats. Sexual morph: Ascomata solitary, sub-globose to globose, immersed to superficial, ostiolate, papillate, subcarbonaceous, dark brown to black, lacking periphyses. Pseudoparenchyma thin-walled, deliquescing at maturity, with pit-connections. Paraphyses lacking. Asci 8-spored, fusiform to clavate, unitunicate, thin-walled, deliquescing early. Ascospores unicellular, fusiform, sigmoid to lunate, thick-walled, with polar appendages. Appendages spine or tube-like, filled with mucilage. At maturity and in water, a drop of mucilage is released which aides in the attachment of the ascospore (Jones 1994). Asexual morph: Undetermined.

Notes – Jones et al. (1983) introduced the genus Kohlmeyeriella as the ascospore appendage ontogeny of Corollospora tubulata differed markedly from that of Corollospora maritima, the type species of the genus. Corollospora species possess ascospores that are 1-many times septate, with polar and equatorial appendages: polar appendages spine-like or thorn-like with fragments of the exospore, while equatorial appendages are sheet-like (Jones et al. 1983). The genus comprises two species: Kohlmeyeriella tubulata and K. crassa (syn. Lulworthia crassa) (Campbell et al. 2005). Molecular data are available for both species.

Type species: Kohlmeyeriella tubulata (Kohlm.) E.B.G. Jones, R.G. Johnson & S.T. Moss, J. Linn. Soc., Bot. 87(2): 210 (1983).

Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Kohlmeyeriella.
